Un-torture Ourselves
Medium: Projection, Stop Motion Video
Year: 2022
Size: 0:30

This piece calls for my fellow teenage girls and women to recognize the ingrained sexism in fashion.
I projected digital drawings of clothing pieces onto myself. Low-waisted tight jeans, crop top, and cut-out mini dress are some designs that I think most represent the discomfort of trendy clothing. Various brush strokes and a series motions presenting numbness, awkwardness, and anxiety.
In the history of fashion, women have always been the ones to wear uncomfortable clothing for the appreciation of the “male gaze”. Unfortunately, in today’s world of gender equality, women are given the same pressure to show curves and show skin by clothing trends. This pressure is undercover as “be confident”, “wear whatever you want”. Wearing comfortable clothes with more coverage are considered “conservative”, “old-school”. Women can indeed be stylish without wearing a tiny piece of thin fabric. I believe women should break out of this confinement and wear things that we truly feel confident in.

Panic in a Gown
Medium: Acrylic on warped PVC pipe canvas (DIY), cotton
Year: 2022
Size: 25x21

This painting emphasizes a contrast between the glamorous ballroom scene and the bullet holes on the windows and city ruins. Scene from a dream. The next day, I saw multiple shootings on the news. It led me to think about all the wildfires, shootings, and terrorist attacks that felt so close to me. I hope to convey the idea that tragedies and disasters are happening so close to the peaceful, happy lives that we are living. Most of the time, we might not even pay attention to them until they start to affect our lives. It feels like these terrible things are constantly lurking around the corner, and it is seemingly impossible for anyone to prevent them from happening. However, we should still “dress up fancily” to face the world and go on with our lives with hope.
I made a warped canvas and glued cotton around to create a dreamy atmosphere.

Sparkle Remains
Medium: Mixed Media
Year: 2022
Size: 11x15

This watercolor portrait explores dreams in different stages of life. I remember my childhood dreams being sparkly, simple but not insignificant. My dreams have changed over time, yet some parts remain the same in its core. In order to show that, I placed sequins around my younger face, and pearls around the older one. Both materials are shiny, but the pearls are more toned down. I still have big hopes and dreams, but just different than that from 13 years ago. For the background, I recreated my childhood drawings.
